SAO PEDRO DE ALCANTARA, Brazil (Reuters) – Waddling across the perimeter of a jail in Brazil’s southern state of Santa Catarina, geese have edged out their canine predecessors on patrols to ensure inmates don’t escape.
Between breaks of their on-site pond, the honking birds, dubbed “geese agents,” patrol a inexperienced house between the jail’s inside fence and predominant outer wall. Workers say the vigilance of the geese make them wonderful guard animals, much more so than canines.
“We have electronic surveillance, in-person surveillance … and finally the surveillance of the geese, which replaced the dogs,” stated jail director Marcos Roberto de Souza.
Piu-Piu heads the small flock, main fellow geese of their oversight of the premises. When officers name his identify, he emits a particular honk.
Souza stated tending the flock of geese is extra reasonably priced than elevating canines and that the quiet location of the jail makes it a viable possibility for his facility.
“Night time is very quiet. Even during the day as you can see it is a very silent place and at night even more so… The space favors this type of security in the case of the geese,” he stated.
