“When you open a gravesite, the bodies, how they are organised, they tell the stories by themselves… they can tell us about how they disappeared, how they were killed,” says forensic anthropologist Meri Gonashvili.
Gonashvili is a lady on a mission. By way of detective-like work, the younger Georgian anthropologist at Tbilisi State Medical College is hoping to establish victims executed by the Soviet secret police through the Reign of Terror, also called the Nice Purge of 1936-1938. The totalitarian marketing campaign led by Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin focused anybody accused of plotting towards the state. Many bizarre residents have been exiled, imprisoned or executed.No less than 700,000 are estimated to have been executed all through the USSR together with some 15,000 in Soviet Georgia. “For this regime, human life didn’t have any value,” says Meri as she reconstructs the skeleton of a sufferer shot within the head.
Most households by no means knew what occurred to their family members.
